Last year, I invested in acrylic make-up organizers for three things: durability, transparency, and versatility. I needed it to work in a space space as well as display all the products that I have accumulated, so I didn’t find myself buying duplicates. Cleaning acrylic organizers regularly helps in maintaining the shine as well as transparency and let’s be real, after a while it becomes dirty and dull and who wants that?!
A few tips you should know beforehand:
Always use a microfiber towel to avoid damage/scratches on your acrylic surface. Steel wool, rough sponges, etc, are a no no. Avoid rubbing aggressively.
Do not use ammonia or acetone-based products (ie Windex) as it will damage the surface making it cloudy and dulling the appearance. This may also cause a cloud affect on the surface or make it crack over time.
Soapy water or a cleaning solution kit (which can be found on Amazon or Container Store) can be used to clean the entire surface and bring back the shine.
Supplies:
Here are the supplies I’ve used:
- Mild dish soap (Example: Dawn or Mrs. Myers)
- Microfiber towel
- Plastic Clean + Shine Solution Kit (optional)
- Make up/Regular wipes and Q-Tips (optional)
Steps:
- Remove all make up and brushes by gently blowing away all dust and loose dirt
- Pre-clean: Use make up or regular wipes to wipe down any build up on the surface. Q-tips can be used to get into stubborn corners
- Use mild dish soap and water to fully clean (Optional: cleaning solution) all make up and rinse with clean water
- Blot dry surface until with microfiber towel until dry
- OPTIONAL: Spray surface with plastic shine solution; using microfiber cloth to buff out for the ultimate shine
If you do have scratches on your organizer as this sometimes does happen, there are acrylic scratch remover systems, like this one which may help in the repair and condition of your investment.
