Tulips will always be synonymous with Spring. They are a classic flower to freshen up any part of a home with a pop of color after a long dreary winter. Even though they are beautiful, keeping them alive for more than a week was a challenge for me. Immediately, my tulips would wilt and get yellow/brown tips after only a few days…until now, FRENS! Here is how I preserved my tulips for 2 weeks.
This is year two of purchasing a fresh-cut tulip surprise box from my local flower farm, Holland Ridge. In the box are 20 stems in two vibrant colors of either red, pink, yellow, or purple (the list goes on!) and an added bonus of free shipping. SCORE! The tulips are vibrant, fresh, and this box is offered all the way up until Mother’s Day. On the package are detailed printed instructions on how to care for your bunch, BUT I found a method that allowed me at least another week with these beauties. After some research and a bit of trial and error, I’m ready to share my outcome.
Step by Step Instructions:
- Peel off any brown or yellow old leaves.
- Fill vase with cold water and add one packet of flower food.
- Add one penny to the bottom of vase to combat any fungus and bacteria.
- Trim the bottom of the stem at a 45-degree angle
- Pierce a hole at the bottom of bulb base. This will help with drooping.
*Supplying clean cold water everyday will also help, too!
If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll notice I posted a reel showing the step by step directions as well. Check out the video below!
As an added bonus, here is a time lapse of the tulips after a week and beyond:
Hopefully this method will help in having your tulips last just a bit longer. If you try it, let me know in the comments as I would love to hear your outcome.
Also, #ICYMI (in case you missed it), a bouquet of tulips would pair so well in the background with my “All-Star” Spring Strawberry Sangria cocktail! Perfect for any boozy brunch, bridal shower, or pool party – enjoy!
