Simple Tips for Board Game Organization

Family Game Night

As a family who loves boards games, the overflow of bulkiness and disorganization was becoming a bit overwhelming.  There were situations where no one wanted to find a game because they were simply hard to find.  In order to take back my closet and find a solution I researched simple ideas to organize our board games and ultimately revive our family game nights!

For months, our board games were stacked and stuffed haphazardly in a closet. No order, boxes were ripped, pieces falling out and missing. The ultimate disaster and eye sore whenever the closet door opened.

Here are a few tips which helped my situation:

  • Small game pieces were stored in snack zip lock bags.  Any card games or decks, fit easily within sandwich plastic bags
  • Board games in which the kids outgrew were donated or given away.  A thought: your local library, charitable organization, or even a children’s hospital can benefit from them as well
  • Any broken or missing pieces? Yep, they were thrown in the trash!

Inspiration

After endless research to find a system that worked for me, I rounded up a few of my favorite ideas below, sharing the option I ultimately moved forward with.  The ultimate goal for me was to gain any extra space I could and have all games in one space/area.

Option 1

Storage in Plastic Containers: This is an awesome idea if you are trying to achieve the uniformed and “stackable” look.  This option also helps if you would like to store multiple games in a drawer by saving as much space as possible.

Option 2

Rolling Plastic Carts: Think of a utility cart used for arts and crafts storage.  These come in a variety of sizes, can roll from one location to another, and can be tucked in a corner/closet when not in use.

Option 3

At first, I found it difficult to organize our board games because the boxes were all different sizes and shapes.  This posed a small problem to make it visually appealing, but here’s how I solved that.  By getting rid of the game boxes completely and purchasing large waterproof zippered pouches, most (if not all) games fit. To identify the game names, I cut a portion of the name and taped it on the outside of the pouch. Tucked them inside a wicker basket and placed them in a corner right in the family room! This option works well to “grab and go” for a quick game with family and friends. Additionally if you were heading for vacation, store it right in a carryon or suitcase!

Option 4

Built in Entertainment centers: These are great for ANY AND EVERYTHING!  If you have an entertainment center which has doors and can be assessable to kids, its easy for them to find and initiate a game on their own!

I hope these board game storage options has inspired you in your own way! Not all options may work for your situation, but finding a solution which has longevity is the biggest hurdle. Creating a good system will have your games lasting for years to come. Which means more memories with the family – who can beat that!

I haven’t been in an @oldnavy store in so long, so GAGGING on all the active wear pieces was an under statement. Each piece is sold separately so, I want to thank me for making a set!

We had a yearly serviceman come by the house the other day. Cool, expected, no big deal… except when the doorbell rang, I couldn’t get there fast enough because—priorities—I had to snatch off my bonnet first 😭

By the time I opened the door, he had already made his way toward the back to “assess the situation.” Sir wasted NO time.

So I walk up, and as he’s looking around he casually asks…
“Is your dad home?”

…

My brain froze for a second. Like sir??? 😅
But then I hit him with a little smirk and said, “You mean my husband?” 😏😂

The way his whole face shifted—
“Oh! You just look so much younger!”

And listen… I’m not arguing with compliments. I receive. Fully. With both hands. 💁🏽‍♀️
